Dear Courageous,
Today in England we celebrate the Autumn Equinox in the week of a Lunar Eclipse, with more to come. We are exactly half way between the summer and winter solstices. This Equinox marks the official end of the high season of Summer.
In many traditions around the world, Eclipses were viewed as violent and antagonistic -with a snake, dragon, wolf or other feared creatures chasing and eating the sun or the moon. Those traditions were easy to understand in a perilous world.
Our world became more perilous this week with more horrific violence. This was perpetrated by a cowardly and desperate Israel crossing a new low in evil atrocities. The weaponising of pagers and phones has raised the roar of the Moloch .
The Moloch is the construction of a mythical creature that unleashes a competitive rage of misaligned incentives. A race to the bottom , where everyone loses.
(An easy Molach example is one person standing up at a concert, then someone else has too in order to see, until everyone is standing and uncomfortable. The Molach results in a negative outcome for everyone involved).
The Molach was one of the most feared mythical deities of Hebrew religions, that involved child sacrifice. So I don’t have to spell out that connection.
I have put a link to an excellent talk by Daniel Schumacher on the Molach and AI…at the end under recommendations .
The consequences of the escalation of violence against Lebanon, have yet to unfold. How will it affect world trade, trust in anything technical, especially if it’s made in Israel ?
That’s not even taking into consideration the crescendo of drums warning of another World War . As Adrienne Marie Brown likes to say
“what is time is it on the clock of the world ? “
There are countless ramifications and perils currently, so let take ourselves back to the Equinox and eclipses to celebrate the changing of the light. Because there are lots of traditions where the meaning behind eclipse’s is love not hate . With the sun and moon are chasing each other through the sky like star crossed lovers only occasionally and briefly being together.
Thousands of years of evolution and equinoxes has taught plants in the western hemisphere that twelve hours of daylight and falling temperatures signal the onset of hibernation.
It’s a time for us to remember the rhythms of our own nature. To take the changes in light as our reason to rest. To pause and put down our burdens, sorrows and cares for a while. Making time to celebrate all the joys and harvests of summer that prepare us for the winter ahead.
“Rest is a universal and critical ingredient in virtually all approach’s to healing.’
Rubin Naiman PhD.
With these thoughts I wish you much love and healing on this Equinox, because love not hate is what is needed now to heal our world.
I welcome your thoughts, observations and experiences of this Courageous Conversation.
Susan
